This morning as I drink coffee at my favorite coffee house, I am thinking of Proverbs 22:28: "Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set." Many times I have reflected on this, and am thinking of some of the ancient landmarks in life.

First, what is a landmark? It is a boundary, a marker, a memorial, a standard, and a way of life. When I cut my grass, there are markers in the yard that establish the boundaries between my property and my neighbor’s property. This tells me where I need to cut and where he needs to cut. In this case we are good neighbors, and if I cross over the line and cut some of his lawn he does not mind. However, if I decide one day that I would like to cross the boundary and build a barn partly on his property, then we would have a problem. I have crossed the landmark that establishes what is his and what is mine. I have been married to Diana for nearly 33 years. During that time we have been faithful to each other; we have honored the landmark of our love and marriage. This landmark is one that God established in His Word. This is an ancient landmark and is not to be removed. As a father, I have set standards for my family that are designed for us to function harmoniously and in unity. The standards are not always followed and sometimes I have even made the mistake of moving the landmark or boundary, thereby causing confusion and insecurity. "Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth" (Eph 6:2-3). This ancient landmark can be celebrated and remembered as we honor our mothers on Mother’s Day. Giving honor and respect to mothers is a landmark that is not to be removed. Make your mother happy by giving her your love and appreciation. Not only will it honor her, but it will be well with you and you may even live long on the earth! As a memorial, we look to those that have passed before us and have given the ultimate sacrifice of their lives to maintain our freedom. Landmarks are vital to security and well being. "Remove not the ancient landmark, which our fathers have set." Yours in Christ,
