A Message From John Thrower Quit You Like Men Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong. I Corinthians 16:13 KJV “Quit you like men.” Some may wonder what this phrase means. It really is quite simple. It means to be a man. Be the man our wife and children want us to be. Not just a man in the physical sense, but more importantly, a man spiritually and emotionally. Let us look briefly at what it means to be a biblical man. A man is aware of spiritual dangers that confront him and his family. The world in which we live and operate is filled with deception. If we are not diligent in safeguarding our family they can fall prey to false teaching. When this happens, evolution, feminism, humanism and perversion can slowly become accepted and ultimately embraced.
For all its benefits and popularity, technology has harmed many families. Many have fallen into immorality through websites. Communication has been broken down by young people and adults plugging into Ipods and MP3 players. Video games promoting lawlessness and violence have desensitized our innocent children. Being aware of the spiritual dangers that exist allows a man to stand up and combat the danger and purpose to protect his family at all costs. A man will be one that holds fast to the Word of God; not only talking of it but living by it. If we are to be successful as fathers and husbands we will be men of the Word. Our wives will have confidence in asking for our counsel knowing that the counsel received is from God’s Word. Our children will seek wisdom from us and not others. We will be the primary teacher of truth and will guide our family into the truth. Only a man will take on this responsibility. Moral strength and integrity will be the controlling factor of a man. His strength will not simply be muscular, but will be character. His life will be strong to resist temptations and to resist anger. His hands will be gentle with love but rock solid for protection. His words will be soft to turn away wrath, but forceful to turn away evil. What a privilege to be a godly man! When the scripture says to "quit you like men," remember that this does not give us the liberty to quit being men, but rather to accept the great role of being a MAN. |
