Description

Speech and Effective Communication Classes
Fall 2010

The Family Vision will host classes on Speech and Effective Communication this fall. These classes will be presented by Karen Morris.

The Speech Class will be held every Friday, 1:00-2:30 P.M., September 10-November 12 (this is a ten-week course). This class is for students ages fourteen and up. The cost for this class is $50 per student. Class size is limited to 15 students. This class may be counted as 1/2 credit for high school students. Students will need a folder, writing utensil, and colored pencils.

The Speech class will cover the following concepts:
  • Personal Experience Speech
  • Scripture Reading
  • Impromptu Poem
  • Pantomime
  • Monologue
  • Devotional (for ladies)/Homily (for gentlemen): Mrs. Morris will teach the ladies. The ladies will perform their devotional for the other ladies of the class. Mrs. Morris’s husband, a pastor, will teach the gentlemen.
UPDATE: The Speech class has been cancelled. Please stay tuned, as we plan to hold this class again in the future.

The Effective Communication Class will be held every Friday, 2:45-3:45 P.M., October 8-29 (this is a four-week course). This class is for students ages eight through thirteen; students must be able to read for this class. The cost for this class is $20 per student. Class size is limited to 15 students. Students will need a folder, writing utensil, and colored pencils.

The Effective Communication class will cover the following concepts:
  • Object Description
  • Pantomime
  • Phone Conversation
  • Scripture Reading

Any student may take these classes, even one who has previously taken either of them. If a student has already taken one of the classes, some of the material will be repeated, but there will be new material as well. The student’s performances will also be new material, giving the student more experience in speaking.

Future classes: In Spring 2011, Mrs. Morris will present an Acting class (for 1/2 high school credit), as well as the Effective Communication class. (Students who have taken Speech in the fall will receive priority enrollment in Acting in the spring. The culmination of the acting class will be to perform a scene, play, or reader's theater as a public event open to family, friends, and patrons of the library.)

From Karen Morris: Steve (my husband) and I believe that it is a parent's job to teach and train their own children. While there may be subject areas in which a parent feels inadequate to teach, their child's education in those areas is still the parent's responsibility. Thus, while we do not require that a parent to attend these classes with their child, we do highly recommend it. Not only will you, as a parent, benefit from learning more about speech, but you will also be able to help teach your own child when they have a question in the middle of the week about the material. Having you in class also allows you to participate with comments, questions, and in a performance such as a phone conversation. Parents who have participated in the first set of summer Speech classes have spoken to me about their own learning and enjoyment. I would like to encourage all parents to enjoy the classes with their child or children.

Meet Karen Morris: While here in St. Louis she is best known for her Coupon Seminars, Karen Morris has a hidden talent. Before she moved to St. Louis, Karen was best known as a thespian.

Having twice made it to state level competition in high school, she distinguished herself early. When she attended Pensacola Christian College, Karen majored in Speech Communications, taking classes such as Voice and Diction, Oral Interpretation, Acting, Dramatic Productions, Group Interpretation, Theater Lighting, and many, many others. While in college, Karen acted in college productions such as A Man Called Peter, Victoria Regina, Tom Sawyer, and Cheaper by the Dozen.

She participated in technical aspects of other college productions such as serving as stage manager for H.M.S Pinafore, designing and making costumes for Little Women, directing properties for Tom Sawyer, and directing the entire operation of Four Who Were There. Also while in college, Karen placed in finals for Commencement Competitions and performed a forty-minute excerpt from Eight Cousins, or the Aunt Hill by Louisa May Alcott for 2,000 students.

She has taught both high school theater and speech in Austin, TX, as well as college speech at Pensacola Christian College. Since graduating from College, Karen has participated in Agatha Christie's The Mouse Trap and directed Twelve Angry Men professionally.

While her speech has been on the back burner for several years, she's ready to get back to helping others communicate effectively so that our Lord may be glorified not only in what we say, but how we say it.
